Want Local Search Rankings on Google Like This? We'll Show You How...

First, how Google Maps ranking actually works

Google ranks your map listing on three things. Once you understand them, every step in this guide makes sense.

1. Relevance

How well your profile and website match what the person is searching for. This is your categories, services, and content. You control most of it.

2. Proximity

How close you are to the searcher. You cannot move your address, but strong relevance and trust widen the area you show up in.

3. Prominence

How known and trusted you are. This is reviews plus links and mentions from other local websites. The more, the better.

The hard truth that drives this whole guide: only the top 3 listings show in the Google map pack. Position 4 is page 2. Being #4 gets about the same number of calls as being #80. The goal is not “higher.” The goal is top 3.

Your build plan

Work top to bottom. Phase 1 is your Google Business Profile. Phase 2 is your website. Phase 3 is off-site trust and AI search. Then you track results. This is exactly what I would do to get you real results.

PHASE 1: YOUR GOOGLE BUSINESS PROFILE
1

Claim and verify your Google Business Profile

Why it matters: You cannot show in the map at all without a verified profile, and you cannot edit anything until Google confirms you are real. Verification is the gate. Everything else waits behind it.

Do this:

2

Choose the right categories (this is the biggest lever)

Why it matters: Your categories tell Google what you are and which searches you can show up for. Each category is a different door into your business. Most owners set one category and stop, leaving easy rankings on the table. Set 1 primary plus 5 secondary categories.

Run this prompt in ChatGPT or Claude, then verify every result matches services you truly offer:

PROMPT: FIND YOUR CATEGORIES
You are a local SEO expert who specializes in ranking Google Business Profiles in the local map pack.

My business: [NICHE] in [CITY, STATE]
Services I actually offer: [PASTE YOUR SERVICES]

Recommend my best Google Business Profile category setup:
1. The single best PRIMARY category (the one most of my searches map to).
2. Five SECONDARY categories that open up more relevant searches without watering down my focus.

Rules:
- Only use categories that exist in Google's official GBP category list (use the exact category names).
- Only suggest categories that match services I truly provide. If you are unsure, ask me before suggesting it.
- Prefer specific categories over broad ones when my services support it.

For each category, add one sentence on the searches it helps me show up for. List the five secondary categories in priority order, most valuable first.

Warning: Never pick a category for a service you do not actually provide. It hurts your credibility and can get your profile suspended, especially in medical, legal, and financial niches.

3

Load every service you offer

Why it matters: Each service is another keyword you can match when someone searches. Services also tell customers exactly what you do without leaving your profile, and they strengthen your category relevance. Do not stop at 20. List them all.

Step A. Generate the full list:

PROMPT: GENERATE YOUR SERVICES
You are a local SEO expert who specializes in Google Business Profile optimization.

My business: [NICHE] in [CITY, STATE]

List at least 30 specific services I should add to my Google Business Profile to capture more local searches.

Rules:
- Each item must be a specific service, not a broad category. (Example: "Tankless Water Heater Installation," not "Plumbing.")
- Include common search variations and alternate names customers actually type.
- Do not invent services I probably don't offer. Flag anything you are unsure about so I can confirm it.

Output as a table with three columns:
Service Name | A one-sentence description I can paste straight into GBP | Why customers search for it

Put the highest-demand services at the top.

Step B. File each service under the right category so Google sees the connection:

PROMPT: ORGANIZE SERVICES INTO CATEGORIES
You are a local SEO expert specializing in Google Business Profile optimization. Your goal is to help rank GBPs higher in map pack results and generate more relevant service calls by creating proper topical relevance between categories and services.

I need you to analyze my GBP categories and services, then assign each service to the category where Google's algorithm would see the strongest semantic relationship.

Here are my GBP categories: [LIST CATEGORIES]

Here are my GBP services: [LIST SERVICES]

For each service, assign it to the ONE category that has the strongest semantic connection from Google's perspective. Consider:
- Which category would a searcher most likely expect to find this service under?
- What search queries would trigger this service, and which category do those queries align with?
- Industry-standard groupings that Google's algorithm recognizes

Output format:
Category: [Category Name]
Services:
- [Service 1]
- [Service 2]

If a service does not clearly fit any one category, list it under a final "Needs Review" heading and explain why, so I can decide where it belongs.

Add a short description to every service. Do not leave any service blank.

4

Write a keyword-rich business description

Why it matters: The description is a safe, low-risk field that reinforces what you do, where you do it, and why you are the better choice. It helps you match more searches. Use close to the full 750 characters.

PROMPT: WRITE YOUR GBP DESCRIPTION
You are a local SEO expert who writes high-converting Google Business Profile descriptions.

Write a GBP description for my business:
- Business type / primary category: [NICHE]
- Location: [CITY, STATE]
- Years in business: [XYZ]
- What makes me different: [YOUR UNIQUE SELLING POINTS]
- Main services to mention: [3-5 SERVICES]

Rules:
- Write in first person, warm and plain-spoken.
- Put my main service and city in the first sentence.
- Naturally work in 3-5 services and one or two trust signals (years in business, guarantee, reviews).
- End with a clear call to action.
- Stay between 700 and 750 characters including spaces. Show the exact character count under each version.

Give me two versions to choose from.

If a version runs over, reply: “Rewrite and keep it under 750 characters including spaces. Show the count.”

5

Fill out every field and geotag your photos

Why it matters: Every empty field is a missed signal. A 100% complete profile tells Google you are an active, legitimate business, and it builds trust with customers. Geotagged photos add location data that has produced overnight ranking jumps.

Do this:

6

Get reviews the right way

Why it matters: Reviews are the lifeblood of local SEO. They build trust, support rankings, and decide who actually gets the call. A #1 listing with 4 reviews loses to a #2 with 400. And AI tools now read the words inside reviews, not just the star count.

Use the highest-converting method: text the link yourself, from your own phone.

COPY/PASTE TEXT MESSAGE TEMPLATE
Hi there, thanks for choosing [Company Name]! Quick favor: would you leave us a short review? Can you tell us what happened and what the outcome was? Even a sentence or two on the service we did, how it went, and your experience helps a ton. Here's the link: [Review Link]. Thank you!

Tip: Keep this template generic with no customer name baked in, so you can fire off 15 to 30 texts fast from your own phone. Each time, paste the review link for whichever platform you are building up that week.

7

Post every week

Why it matters: Regular posts signal that your profile is active and managed, which Google rewards. It is a low-risk way to keep adding fresh, keyword-friendly content. The goal is one post a week, all year.

Generate a full year of posts in one go, then schedule them:

PROMPT: 52 GBP POSTS FOR THE YEAR
Create 52 engaging Google Business Profile posts for [BUSINESS NAME], a [BUSINESS TYPE] located in [CITY/REGION]. Each post should be between 150-300 characters, include a clear call-to-action, and be designed to increase engagement, visibility, and conversions.

Do not include email address, phone number, or website url in the GBP posts.

Split the 52 posts evenly across these four types (13 each):
- Promotional (special offers, new services, limited-time deals)
- Educational (tips, how-to, FAQs, myth-busting)
- Engagement (customer stories, behind the scenes, team, community)
- Seasonal/Event (holidays, local events, seasonal trends, milestones)

Output the 52 posts as a table so I can schedule them in order, with these columns:
Week (1-52) | Suggested Month | Post Type | Headline | Body (150-300 characters) | Call-to-action | Image idea | 2-3 hashtags

Vary the call-to-action across posts ("Call now," "Book online," "Learn more," "Stop by today"). Match seasonal posts to the right month. Work my main services, city, and nearby areas in naturally. Use emoji sparingly.
PHASE 2: YOUR WEBSITE
8

Build a website that mirrors your profile (your Core Pages)

Why it matters: In local SEO, every page on your site has one job: to make your Google profile rank higher. When your website has a page for each category and each service, Google sees deep proof of what you do and trusts you more. Most businesses hit their ranking goal before they even finish.

Build out your Core Pages like this:

Now structure your pages in silos (this part is critical):

A silo is a group of related pages that all point to one main page. Each category is a parent. The services under it are the children. You link them tightly to each other, and you keep each silo separate from the rest.

Homepage (hub)
├─ Plumbing (category / parent page)
│ ├─ Water Heater Replacement Fontana (service / child)
│ ├─ Drain Cleaning Fontana (service / child)
│ └─ Leak Detection Fontana (service / child)
└─ Drainage (category / parent page)
     ├─ Sewer Line Repair Fontana
     └─ Hydro Jetting Fontana

The linking rules that make a silo work:

Why the silo is critical: Links pass ranking power between your pages. A silo funnels that power into one tightly themed group, instead of letting it leak across the whole site. It tells Google you go deep on each category, not just wide. A clean silo is often the difference between page 1 and page 2.

Use this prompt to outline a service page that is built to rank your profile and fit your silo:

PROMPT: OUTLINE A LOCAL SERVICE PAGE
Role: You are a world-class local SEO writer. Produce a complete content outline (bullets only) for a single-service page. The one goal is to build topical relevance that helps my Google Business Profile rank higher in the local map pack for this service.

My inputs:
- City: [CITY, STATE]
- Service focus: [EXACT SERVICE NAME]
- Parent category (this page lives inside this silo): [CATEGORY NAME]
- Sibling services in the same silo: [LIST 2-4 RELATED SERVICES]
- "People Also Ask" questions from Google for this service: [PASTE 8-12 QUESTIONS]

Rules:
- Outline only, in bullets. No full prose. No prices. No invented stats.
- Reading level Grade 5-6. Sentences under 20 words. Plain, local, helpful.
- Write for a Google searcher ready to book, and speak as a local expert.
- Include the exact phrase "[Service] in [City]" in the H1 or the first 100 words.
- Mention the city once per section and a nearby neighborhood every 2-3 sections.

Build the outline in this order:
1. H1 that includes the service and city in an engaging way.
2. Intro bullets: localizer line, what the page covers, light next step, value tied to the parent category.
3. One Featured Snippet / AI Overview target: pick the single best question, explain in one line why it can win, and give the answer shape (a 2-3 sentence definition plus 3 bullets, OR 5-7 short steps, max 115 words).
4. 4-6 statement-style H2 headings built from the People Also Ask questions, each mapped to a real buyer job (decide, prepare, perform, verify, prevent). For each H2: who it's for, the key benefit, one specific local detail.
5. 4-6 local FAQs with the answer in the first sentence.
6. Internal links: suggest exact anchor text linking up to the parent category page and across to 1-2 sibling services in the same silo.
7. Suggest a meta title (50-60 characters) and meta description (150-160 characters) using the target keyword and city.
8. Final assembly of the full outline in order, with the internal link suggestions kept in place.

Always fact-check and human-edit. Add a real story or tip from a job you actually did. Google rewards content that is helpful and real, not generic.

9

Add schema markup to your pages

Why it matters: Schema is code that spells out exactly who you are, what you do, and where, so Google and AI tools do not have to guess. Most of your competitors are missing it, so it is one of the fastest wins available. AI search engines weight it heavily.

Generate it with AI, then add it to your site and validate it:

PROMPT: CREATE YOUR LOCAL BUSINESS SCHEMA
You are a technical SEO expert. I want complete JSON-LD schema for my local business landing page that helps both Google and AI search engines understand my business.

First, list every detail you need from me (business name, address, phone, hours, geo coordinates, services, social profile URLs, price range, logo URL).
THEN REPLY WITH
[GIVE THE REQUESTED INFORMATION]

Now write the schema as JSON-LD wrapped in a script tag, ready to paste into my site:
- Use the most specific LocalBusiness type available for a [NICHE].
- Nest my main services using Service schema.
- Include address, phone, opening hours, geo coordinates, areaServed, and my social profile links (sameAs).
- Make the business name, address, and phone match my Google Business Profile exactly.

Then remind me to test it at validator.schema.org before I publish.

Put Local Business schema on your main landing page only. Add Organization schema site-wide and FAQ schema on any page with questions. Test your code free at validator.schema.org before you publish.

PHASE 3: OFF-SITE TRUST AND AI SEARCH
10

Build local trust with links and citations

Why it matters: Links and mentions from other local websites are votes of confidence. Local links carry extra weight because they prove you are part of the community, which is exactly what helps a map listing. Backlinks account for roughly half of where you rank.

Get listed everywhere it counts:

Use this prompt in ChatGPT or Claude (deep research mode) to build a prioritized list of local link targets:

PROMPT: FIND LOCAL BACKLINK OPPORTUNITIES
I need a comprehensive list of all the potential backlink opportunities in [CITY, STATE] for a local [NICHE] business.

Include these categories:
- Local Organizations & Community Groups (chambers of commerce, neighborhood associations, Rotary clubs, nonprofits that allow listings or sponsor acknowledgments)
- Events & Sponsorship Opportunities (festivals, fundraisers, community fairs that offer a backlink on their event page)
- Business Directories & Listing Websites (local and industry-specific directories)
- Local Media Outlets (online newspapers, magazines, community newsletters that accept submissions or sponsor mentions)
- Educational Institutions & Government Pages (schools, colleges, government sites that list local providers)

For each opportunity include:
- The organization name and a short note on why it's relevant for my business
- The website URL
- How to apply or request inclusion (membership fee, sponsorship, contact form)
- Whether it is paid or free
- Any requirements, costs, or details that affect feasibility

Rank each list by priority, weighing the authority of the link against the effort to earn it. Put each URL as its own numbered entry. Do not combine URLs. Do not include Google Business Profile.

For my top 5 highest-priority opportunities, also add an estimated authority level (high, medium, or low) and a short, friendly outreach message I can send or email to request the link.
11

Show up in AI search (ChatGPT and Google AI)

Why it matters: More and more people ask ChatGPT and Google AI “who is the best [service] near me.” AI does not rank you the same way Google Maps does. It reads brand mentions, reviews, and trusted sites like Reddit. The good news: most of the work above already helps. You just add a few extras.

First, see if AI even knows you exist:

PROMPT: CHECK YOUR AI VISIBILITY
If someone had never searched for a [SERVICE TYPE] before and lived in [CITY, STATE], who would you recommend and why? Please base your answer on publicly available sources like Bing, Yelp, Google reviews, or local mentions. Assume you know nothing about the person asking. Just give the best general recommendation for the public.

After your answer, list the specific signals that made each business you recommended stand out (reviews, directory listings, local mentions). Then name any reputable local businesses you did NOT recommend and explain why. I want to know exactly what I need to improve to get recommended.

Then close the gaps:

THEN: MEASURE WHAT MATTERS
12

Track your map rank, not just "traffic"

Why it matters: You cannot improve what you do not measure. A rank map shows where you stand across your whole service area, so you know if you are in the top 3 and which neighborhoods still need work.

Do this:
